The photobook titled ‘In Between’ offers an unseen glimpse into Seth Troxler’s whirlwind tour

Seth Troxler and Bill Patrick have unveiled In Between, a photobook that captures an intimate and nuanced portrayal of life on the road, seamlessly blending visual storytelling with a deeper reflection on the transient nature of global touring. Comprising over 250 carefully curated photographs and accompanying texts, the book marks Patrick’s debut venture into the world of photobooks and a significant creative milestone for both artists.

The images, shot exclusively on 35mm film using an eclectic array of vintage cameras—including the Contax T2, Minolta Maxxum 7000, and Olympus XA2—were taken over a span of nine months between February and November 2023. This period coincided with Troxler’s whirlwind world tour that spanned four continents, 20 countries, and more than 40 cities. The duo’s collaborative endeavour seeks to transcend traditional expectations of music photography by offering a contemplative exploration of the ‘in-between’—those fleeting moments between sets, cities, and encounters, where the true essence of the journey lies.

Reflecting on his experience, Patrick expressed on social media, “It’s been an emotional year, to say the least. So this moment is extra special and meaningful. My first photo book is now available to pre-order.” He continued, “This book is an ode to our friendship that has spanned nearly 20 years.” In doing so, Patrick underscores the deeply personal nature of this project, which, despite its documentary aesthetic, strives to resist the superficiality often associated with music industry visuals. “We wanted to portray something more nuanced than the conventional feel-good content that we’re bombarded with on social media,” Patrick elaborates, emphasising their intent to capture moments that go beyond the obvious.

Troxler, in turn, shared his excitement about the forthcoming launch, stating: “Very excited to share this news. Today I’m launching my first book.” Highlighting the significance of the project, he added, “Bill documented every moment of this journey combining photojournalism, music photography and portraiture. The resulting photographs offer an intimate glimpse into my life on the road and a kaleidoscopic reflection on the velocity of life.”

The book’s title, In Between, not only refers to these transient moments but also serves as a metaphor for the duo’s long-standing friendship, which began almost two decades ago outside a party in Williamsburg. As Troxler noted, “When Bill and I first discussed this book, it was a way to spend more time together. It became a year of looking at life through a different lens.” Their creative partnership, forged through years of camaraderie, is palpable in the collection’s raw and unfiltered narrative.

To commemorate the launch, an exclusive event will take place at this year’s Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) on Friday, October 18. The evening will feature a book signing alongside a live conversation between Troxler and Patrick, providing attendees a unique opportunity to explore in greater detail the duo’s shared experiences, creative synergy, and the stories that shaped In Between.

In many ways, this photobook represents a convergence of multiple art forms and perspectives. As Patrick aptly puts it, “In many ways, my photography is more personal than any set I’ve ever played.” The result is a piece that challenges the traditional boundaries of live music photography, capturing not just the spectacle of performance but the humanity that permeates the spaces in between—a testament to the enduring power of friendship and artistic collaboration.
