Revisit the sonic explorations of Micro-Music 2023 and prepare for an inspiring new edition
As the 68th International Festival of Contemporary Music, one of the key event series within the prestigious Venice Biennale, approaches, excitement is building for this year’s programme, running from September 26 to October 11. Under the direction of Lucia Ronchetti, the Festival promises an extraordinary showcase of global talent, featuring daily events with international soloists, ensembles, and the innovative Biennale College Musica. This initiative, an integral part of the Biennale Musica, continues to foster groundbreaking new projects that will be central to the Festival's offerings.
In light of the approaching festival, we invite our readers to revisit the captivating Micro-Music section in the festival’s 2023 programme. This unique exploration of digital sound delved into the microscopic nature of music, pushing the boundaries of acoustic space through advanced technologies and experimental research. Micro-Music is a sonic journey that uncovers the hidden beauty and complexity of digital sound, as it interacts with the distinctive acoustic environments of Venice's architectural marvels.
The artists who participated in Micro-Music 2023, including the likes of Kode9, Loraine James, Autechre, Robert Henke, Øther, Snufkin, Jaehoon Choi and Fabio Machiavelli, were not merely musicians but sonic sculptors, digital archaeologists and creators of new acoustic incantations. Their work invited attendees to experience sound in its purest form, detached from its sources, and challenges us to engage with the world of inaudible frequencies made perceptible through the marvels of modern technology.
As we prepare for another year of inspiring contemporary music at the Venice Biennale, let these digital masterpieces from Micro-Music 2023 remind us of the ever-evolving possibilities in the realm of sound.
The Venice Festival of Contemporary Music (Italian: Festival Internazionale di Musica Contemporanea della Biennale di Venezia), established in 1930, originated as an extension of the renowned Venice Biennale, enriching the cultural landscape of this historic festival with a dedicated focus on contemporary musical expression.
In addition to the upcoming music festival, the Venice Biennale is currently hosting the 60th International Art Exhibition, which continues until November 24, and the 81st Venice International Film Festival, running from August 28 to September 7.
